I am a "community organizer" of sorts for the Sugar Land/Stafford branch of the umbrella organization Houston Atheists on Meetup.com, which gets together for dinner and conversation locally about once per month, usually on a weekday after work. We try to also support local businesses rather than national chains with our choice of venue. We have a harmonious rapport with the couple of local restaurants we have thus far chosen to patronize.
When I lived and worked in Denton, Texas, which is located in North Texas, in the greater DFW Metroplex, I helped to found the Denton Atheists Meetup in 2008, which I'm happy to report is still going strong years after I left. I founded the Denton Atheist Meetup because the local campus-based organizations (UNT's Freethought Alliance, and virtually non-existent presence at Texas Woman's University) just weren't convenient for me. I'm happy to have gained support from UNT Freethought Alliance in the early days, with a lot of overlap in membership, but I noticed that I managed to pull in retired folks and other adult professionals that otherwise would not have turned out to a strictly campus-based organization.
